Devon just completed his first weekend pulling double duty
in his '08 Concept Chassis ride. Friday nights results
were by far better than Saturdays (both nights were at Will
Rogers Raceway in Claremore, Ok). Devon's Friday night
began with the non-wing heat race which he started from the
pole. Devon quickly took command of the heat and had a
comfortable lead until a caution with three to go allowed
the field to catch-up. Coming to the re-start, Devon
slammed the wall under the flag stand while trying to avoid
the cone. This broke the rear panhard bar and Devon
managed to hold on to a second place finish. Much
needed repairs made us scratch for the A class heat.
On to the non-wing feature where Devon started outside the
front row. He took command early on and set a torrent
pace leading until halfway. Devon was definitely
feeling a bit out of shape and watched as the eventual
winner sailed by on the high side. Devon fell into his
wheel tracks and settled for a second place finish which was
his best ever at Will Rogers Raceway. The A class
feature saw Devon starting shotgun on the field after the
heat race scratch. He wasted no time as he was sitting
fifth after two laps had been completed. Having had
little time to rest between races, Devon settled in to a
solid fifth and was content to ride it home. Coming to
the checkers, the fourth place car lost a motor and Devon
was able to capitalize on his misfortune to bring home a
fourth place finish.
Saturday night was a total set-up disaster on my
(crew-chief, Dad) part. In the non-wing heat, the car
was way to tight and Devon fell from his fourth place
starting position to finish seventh. In the A class
heat he started fourth and ran a solid third on a track that
was coming-in just perfectly. The non-wing feature saw
Devon come from his sixth place starting position to join a
three car battle for the early lead. His car was very
loose on entry and Devon decided not to push the issue.
He fell back to fifth and was riding along there when
fatigue began to set-in again. Devon spun the car into
the infield and then had troubles getting the motor to
re-fire so he could re-join the field. His finish was
a disappointing seventh after having such a great early run.
The A class feature started without Devon on the track as he
lost the chain in the staging area. This was a total
embarrassment to me as we are usually better prepared than
that. Running double classes in one night is more
taxing than I ever thought it would be. This will be a
good challenge for our team's preparedness and a better
challenge for Devon's physical fitness. All in all we
had a great weekend and returned home with minimal damage.
We are looking forward to our next show in two weeks.
